{"id":8,"date":"2011-10-12T10:14:30","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T14:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mainstreetpens.com\/wordpress\/?p=8"},"modified":"2011-12-27T17:35:07","modified_gmt":"2011-12-27T21:35:07","slug":"nib-work-hey-this-pen-writes-by-itself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mainstreetpens.com\/wordpress\/?p=8","title":{"rendered":"Nib work (hey, this pen writes by itself!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a fan of books about WW II aircraft, and all that stuff.\u00a0\u00a0 Given the chance, I&#8217;ll spend hours reading the books and looking at pictures.\u00a0 I love air shows, especially when I have a chance to get into one of the airplanes.\u00a0\u00a0 A tour through a B17 was an eye opener.\u00a0 One real treat though was when I got into a B29.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 The (then) Confederate Air Force B29 FIFI was in Syracuse for a few days.\u00a0 A kid who was working for me doing lawn work at the radio station knew a guy who was a pilot for Eastern Airlines (this tells you how long ago it was), who was one of the pilots that flew the plane. We were in.\u00a0 While I didn&#8217;t get a chance to go into the back part of the aircraft, I did get onto the flight deck, look down the connecting tunnel, and watched while they worked on one of the engines.\u00a0 Seeing the thing take off on a test flight was cool.\u00a0 I came <em>that close<\/em> to getting to fly in it out to Michigan.\u00a0 The only thing that stopped me was that I couldn&#8217;t figure out how to get back.\u00a0 Bummer.<\/p>\n<p>In case you don&#8217;t believe me, here&#8217;s a picture of a much younger and thinner me (with hair no less) on the flight deck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mainstreetpens.com\/pix\/B29-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But I digress&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What caught my eye as I was reading through a book was a comment that once in a while an aircraft would come off of the line that just about flew itself.\u00a0 These things were made with the same parts, to the same specifications by the same crews, but once in a while one came out that was just <em>right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think that the same thing happens with pens.\u00a0 Manufacturers have the same parts, same people, and most of the nibs are acceptable and write to most people&#8217;s expectations.\u00a0 But then you get one that&#8217;s just <em>right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I dare say that few folks ever experience a <em>really<\/em> good nib.\u00a0 Most experience nibs that are good, or pretty good. \u00a0 The job of a &#8220;nib meister&#8221;
